In the wake of the announcement that Kylie Minogue will be appearing in the 2007 Christmas special, two disturbing facts have come to light:
1. There are people on the internet who don't know Kylie was an actress.
2. There are people on the internet who DON'T KNOW WHO KYLIE IS.
*sigh*
People, people, people! What am I to do with you?
Kylie Minogue: born in Melbourne in 1968, she started out as a child actress in various Australian soap operas. Her more-talented, less-charismatic sister Dannii, meanwhile, regularly sang on Young Talent Time, occasionally appearing with Kylie.
Kylie's big break came when she was cast as Charlene in the Australian soap opera
Neighbours. (Other famous people spawned by
Neighbours, for better or for worse: Russell Crowe, Alan Dale, Natalie Imbruglia, Holly Valance, Rahda Mitchell, Brook Satchwell ... oh, and Natalie Bassingthwaite, who now performs vocals for the Rogue Traders, and whose song you probably remember from "The Sound of Drums".)
Kylie stayed with
Neighbours for two years, in which time she won a number of popular awards. When I was small, my friends and I used to fight over who would play her character, Charlene, in our games.
Kylie acting:
She's not actually a good actress by any stretch of the imagination, but she has presence and charm.
In 1988, she had a number one hit with a cover of "Locomotion", and soon left
Neighbours to pursue a full-time music career.
The "Locomotion" video:
She enjoyed considerable success as a pop-dance artist for the next few years, but eventually rebelled against her girl-next-door image. In the mid-nineties, her songs and image -- she changes her image as frequently as Madonna -- became more alternative, a trend that culminated in her 1997
Impossible Princess album. She wrote most of the songs on this album, and it's quite brilliant.
From
Impossible Princess -- the video for "Did It Again":
Sales, however, were not brilliant, and after this she returned to her pop roots. She finally had a hit in America with "Can't Get You Out of My Head".
In the last few years, she has struggled with breast cancer, completed a massive world tour and set about recording her new album. She is immensely famous and popular in Britain and Australia, and is particularly beloved by the gay community.
So now you know.
