I am going to bow out of LJ, not sure how long I will be gone for but for now I am not going to use this journal.
I will stay on to mod the communities that I have agreed to help out here but this is it from me.
As a final note I am putting this up, unlocked so that my friends and non friends can see.
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED
Around the 20th of March Live Journal and its parent company Six Apart suspended over 500 journals because a website told them to.
The reason? Pedophilia. Yes I know that this is bad and wrong and harmful to kids and I am in no way defending them, the issue is that by acting the way that they acted they drove known pedophiles underground. They hindered ongoing investigations, and when they suspended a bunch of fandom LJ (both community and personal) the fandom fort back.

This was fine and Six Apart back flipped and started re instating journals. BUT they reinstated journals of known pedophiles. (many users are now banging their heads against their computer desks)
Then comes the issue if you think about having sex with a child are you a pedophile? If a fanfic writer writes a fic about say Xander and Spike and Xander is under the legal age of consent (which he was in season one of Buffy even if the actor was not) does this make you a pedophile? Are you legally allowed to write this? Is this grounds to be removed from LJ?
While the fandoms where worrying about this a few people started worrying about the impact that the strikeout would have on on-going investigations.

The reason I bring this to your attention is that many of the journals suspended where FAN based (e.g. fandom’s from Buffy or Harry Potter) fans shouted back, people where hurt, people where accused of thing and all because of a website Warriors for Innocence which did nothing more then force the people they where trying to catch underground. Fans and users are crying that they had lost the right to freedom of speech. This issue is not that this happened, but that a company/organization that is not in anyway affiliated with any law enforcement office managed to get a company to BAN users based off things like interests listed. In the case of this latest ban it was the word “incest” issues was the incest survivor groups have the word in their interests where banned, no care was taken to look at who was banned.

Behind locked posts the fans & Survivor groups are screaming for blood.
The issue is that when this happened, many journals that where being watched by law enforcement for pedophilia reasons where suspended by Six Apart. Users promoting acts such as sex with children, groups that exchanged stories about sex with children, organized met ups between member and arguing about ages of consent where suspended. A good thing right? No, not when they where being watched and monitored by law enforcement agents. Years of work were lost because Six Apart panicked about their stock prices!
Yes there are issues of freedom of Speech, but the greater issue here is the fact that Warriors of Innocence give parents a “How to protect your child from predators” which at the same time can also be read as an instruction manual.
This is what happens when people who have no knowledge of how to act in the best interest of the child get involved. At one stage they had a post up that gave you hints on how to pretend to be a 6 year old so you could catch pedophiles online. Ask any police officer and they will tell you that this is NOT a good idea, also if a parent can read that and pretend to be 6 why can’t a pedophile read the same material and pretend to be 6?
